RF-TP™ Client Overview
The client component of the RF-TP™ software runs on a Symbol hand held computer. It is implemented as a C++ program supporting a TCP/IP connection over a Spectrum 24® radio network. The client program
uses the API set of the Marietta Libraries™ product to quickly implement sophisticated applications.
The user interface and application flow is implemented in the client application. Small to medium size data files can be loaded onto the Symbol hand held computer and built into ISAM files for local
access by the client application.
User Interface
The client-server model implemented by the RF-TP™ software places responsibility for the user interface in the client application.
This also greatly reduces radio traffic as relatively few messages are passed to the server, usually just those requiring database access or use of shared resources, such as printers.
Complex field validation, and field and form relationships are supported within the client application. This provides a more responsive application with a superior user interface, when compared to
enabler-based or terminal emulation products.
Database Access Independence
The client-server model implemented by the RF-TP™ software places responsibility for the database access and update in the server application. The design and access for single or multiple databases
is retained within the server software and is transparent to the client software.
Typically, the client software sends a simple message to the server requesting verification of a field, retrieval of one or more records, or a database update. The server software formats and issues
the database commands, and then transmits the reply to the client in a simple response message.
Text File Import/Export
Standard facilities are provided to import text format files onto the client from the server, and to export text files to the server. Several clients can simultaneously append to the same text file
on the server. The server software can periodically transfer these text files to be processed by an external application.
