Overview

There is an alternative to discarding existing batch applications when implementing Spectrum/24 radio networks. Your existing Symbol 3x00 and 6x00 application can be upgraded to transmit files over the Spectrum/24 ® network, using TCP/IP and our RF-TP™ Server software.

We can replace the existing batch communications modules within your application with TCP/IP communications modules. Files can be sent to and from the hand held computer under application program control over your Spectrum/24 network.

In most cases, Marietta Systems, Inc. can upgrade your existing batch application with just a few days of effort.

Benefits of Upgrading Your Batch Application

Upgrading to TCP/IP file transfer increases the frequency that data is transmitted to and from the hand held computer. The transfer can be initiated anywhere within radio range and does not require the operator return to a fixed cradle location. Information that was previously processed overnight can be uploaded and processed multiple times during the day.

These TCP/IP data transfers are faster than batch transfers and can occur concurrently from many hand held computers.

Just changing the communications method within your application does not involve re-training personnel or re-writing operating procedures. The format of data files generated and used by your hand held application is unchanged, and can be processed by existing mainframe software.

Initially the radio connection is on an occasional basis, and the application can be used outside of areas of radio coverage, only requiring to be within coverage when files are transmitted.

Incremental Enhancement

Once TCP/IP file transfers are implemented, the application can be progressively enhanced to take advantage of the immediacy of the radio connection. Fields that could only be verified after-the-fact, can now be validated through ODBC connections to corporate databases. Data can be sent at logical points in the application flow instead of end-of-shift or end-of-day. The full benefits of radio can then be realized through incremental enhancement of the application.
